Is there any way to get the reports to work without having reporting services installed? My hosting company is being a pain about this. I tried to copy reporting dlls to my bin directory, but it's just getting weirder. Anyone have any suggestions?
There is an install program that is required for the Microsoft Report Viewer to run on a server. This is something that most ISPs support but as you found is not universal.
You can read more about deploying the report viewer from here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms251723(VS.80).aspx
I put the dll in bin, then was asked for another. I put that in, and was told I needed to do something with the registry. This being a hosted server, I realized that I was embarking on a mission for which there was no clear exit strategy. This is borne out by the response from the admin (see above).
I'd love to find out why MS makes it a pain to use (some of) their products in a reasonable way. They had a great (unoriginal) idea with their "xcopy" deployment strategy, and it works great most of the time. Then something like this comes along, and I am left with a stupid look on my face.

What is getting 'weird'
What is getting 'weird' about putting the reporting DLLs in your \Bin directory?
Does your host not allow that DLL?
"Weird" was the wrong word. "Whaaa???" is the right word.
