Role based administration would help the product in larger companies. A systems admin is different than a marketing person making edits to products. Admins don’t want to trust that a marketing person could attempt to alter page designs, payment information, and anything else that could crash the system. Here at LoJack, management asks “how did they even have access to that ?” And if I as the system admin am the only trusted one, every time a product or order changes I have to be the editor.
At a larger company, that’s a full time job (or even more), not a developer’s job. I.T. people should be the only system-wide admins, marketing and sales folks should have “editor” roles to the catalog and sales areas to make changes to products, categories, orders, and customer accounts.
We definitely see ZNode's store growing in usage within our company. Stronger role based entitlement would help it grow more quickly.
Upgrading and Timeframe
Hello,
I just purchased two storefront licenses for our client. Due to their internal structure, they require the role based adminstration that this article details (glad to hear its coming out!). Two questions:
I'm afraid that if I can not provide them this role-based administration soon (and for low to no cost), I'll end up doing a custom modification on my own (which I'd really rather avoid).
Thanks for your time,
-Jono
Role Based Admin
Version 5.0 is expected in mid June. Keep in mind though that a number of things can affect release dates and feature set.
Version 5.0 is considered a major upgrade (really it will be a very major upgrade as far as features). If you purchased the maintenance agreement along with your software you can upgrade for free. Otherwise the upgrade cost is about 50% of the full license cost.
When upgrading from 4.4 to 5.0 you will need to run a script to upgrade your schema and merge in any custom code and layout that you have done. Testing is of course critical!

Role Based Admin
Good news! The upcoming version 5.0 of Znode Storefront will have role based administration. You will be able to hide various features from the left menu based on user login.
