During my configuration of a 30-day trial instance of zNode I noticed that the administration panel does not have a well defined structure for creating different shipping rate types. Right now there exists only three: Flat Rate Per Item, Rate Based on WEIGHT, Rate Based on QUANTITY. It seems to me there would be merit in creating a Shipping Rate Type engine allowing developers to define a collection of shipping rate types to construct a Commerce Server type 'pipeline' for calculating rates based on business needs.
Has there been any consideration for this type of functionality? I understand that the shipping rule engine provides a method for generating situationally specific shipping rates, but this pushes the requirements back on the developer to create a new rule for each shipping calculation that doesn't fit into the shipping rate types provided by the CUSTOM engine.

Shipping Rule Type Engine
Zack,
I am rather new to e-commerce and am not following what you are after. Can you briefly describe, or provide a reference to, the 'pipeline' that Commerce Server uses?
